“This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the Lord Almighty.”
Zechariah 4:6
The journey towards eternity is the life of every Christian. This journey of a believer is seldom a cake walk, instead, it needs the understanding of God and His word. Many start the journey, but few understand its essence and live a life pleasing to God. Some get weary with the troubles and the tribulations that they happen to hear and experience. Some also get tired and go vulnerable to the wily nature of the world. Many fear and stumble along their journey towards eternity and get anxious whether it would be victorious.
As a Believer, if you are worried about the current cataclysmic world, let your heart not be troubled, rather be encouraged and rejoice in the Lord. Few areas in the old testament show us a man of God named Zerubbabel. He was one of the iconic forerunners who were keen in rebuilding the Temple at Jerusalem that was destroyed by their captors. Zerubbabel led the people of God to work for the Temple of God and laid its foundation. After that, many times they were hindered by their enemies and the wicked ones while progressing to build the Temple of God. (Ezra 4:2) However, every time they got tired of troubles they were encouraged by God incessantly.
Especially, Zerubbabel was encouraged by the Lord to resume his work for the temple of God. Many years passed and people still faced difficulties in finishing it, but the Lord never left them discouraged. From the time, the foundation was laid during the reign of King Cyrus, they struggled for many years to complete the work of the Temple. However, Lord God strengthened the hearts of His people in rebuilding the Temple. God is delighted to have His work done by His people, the chosen ones. He repeatedly made them strong in heart amidst all the chaos, to do His work wholeheartedly.(Ref Haggai 1:14; 2:4)
Zerubbabel had distinctively received promises from God to remember at perilous times. “Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel, saith the LORD; and be strong, O Joshua, son of Josedech, the high priest; and be strong, all ye people of the land, saith the LORD, and work: for I am with you, saith the LORD of hosts:” (Haggai 2:4) We also tend to lose our hearts with the present scenario of the society and of the world, in our walk of faith. But we should know that God is always the same and he never changes His words. (Ref Numbers 23:19) He strengthens us by reminding His promises to us. We know that God never forsakes us, but still, we mumble during our tough times. Let us not do this henceforth, as God has promised to be with us to save us.
The people at the time of Zerubbabel might have doubted whether they can finish the remaining work of the Temple of God that was kept confined so long. However, God is sure to do His work against the massive crowd of enemies with His meagre amount of people. Zechariah 4:7, 9 says, “Who art thou, O great mountain? before Zerubbabel thou shalt become a plain: and he shall bring forth the headstone thereof with shoutings, crying, Grace, grace unto it. The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house; his hands shall also finish it; and thou shalt know that the LORD of hosts hath sent me unto you.” The Lord God confirms and declares through the prophet that, the Zerubbabel will finish the work of the Temple of God by his hands. This made him regain his momentum for the work of God.
We, being the temple of the living God (2 Corinthians 6:16) often lose our hope in this Christian walk and doubt whether we would remain like an unfinished temple. But God never leaves us to be unfinished in any of his heavenly or worldly grants.(Philippians 1:5;6) We ourselves would have disregarded our foundational stages in Christ, but God never looks us that way. Irrespective of what the world does to us, irrespective of all the hindrances that come our way, we have a great source of hope to rely on. Nothing can stop us from loving our Lord. No one can hinder us in moving forward towards the Lord and being the temple of the Spirit of God. In such disregardful state, the Lord says, “For who hath despised the day of small things? for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel with those seven; they are the eyes of the LORD, which run to and fro through the whole earth.” (Zechariah 4:10).
Being strengthened by these promises from the eternal God, Zerubbabel passed a season of perseverance and the time of the Lord came during the reign of King Darius. The scroll holding the order of King Cyrus to rebuild the Temple of God, was recovered miraculously. Swiftly the Temple was rebuilt and dedicated for God. When the time of the Lord came, no one could stop it from happening. As it was prophesied, Zerubbabel pioneered and finished building the glorious Temple of God. The time of the Lord God has come now in your life. The Lord who strengthened Zerubbabel, will also strengthen you as His temple and demonstrate His mighty and awesome works in you. Wait in His presence and Expect glorious things from Him.
